Campaigners raise a symbolic empty glass

The local community in and around Stonesfield came out in force on Sunday 21 August to raise a symbolic empty glass in front of the White Horse pub.

It’s been more than a year since the pub changed hands, and with no sign of it reopening the message from the community was clear: we want to see the pub open again and thriving under community ownership.

To that end, we have reopened their fundraising campaign and submitted an offer to purchase the pub from the current owner.

Steve Callaghan, Chair of the Stonesfield Community Pub Committee, said “We have a long way still to go to the target we need to buy and run the pub successfully and we have to be realistic that this campaign may have to run for years.”

“But we’re delighted that such a large turnout today sends a powerful message to any potential property developers looking to buy this pub - the community’s commitment to save the building and run it as a pub continues to remain immensely strong.”

“Many rural pubs have stayed shut for extended periods only to be rescued by their community once the property developers have finally given up. With everyone’s support, we can add the White Horse in Stonesfield to the list of pubs that have been saved.”

The glasses at the event did not remain empty for long though. Thanks to the generous help of the Little Ox Brew Co, who provided locally-brewed beer in campaign-themed cans, the supporters were able to drink to the hope of a community-owned future for the pub.

Shares to support the campaign are on sale at www.backthewhitehorse.com/shares and a number of fundraising and events are planned in the coming weeks.

11th September - the ‘pop-up White Horse’. For one night only, the village hall will take on the role of the village pub – the bar will be open, thanks to the fantastic support from the team at the Stonesfield Sports and Social Club and all are welcome!

17th September – cake sale outside the village shop. The aim is to recreate the great success of the sales in 2020, when American broadcaster ABC news was on hand and £1,000 was raised for the campaign. If any Oxfordshire bakers would like to donate products, we'd be very grateful.

24th September – the return of the car wash. Another success from 2020 and a chance to spruce up the motor after the dusty summer or just laugh at the team getting soaked.

1st October – White Horse (mini) beer festival. Again at the village hall with beer, food and music. What better way to come together and demonstrate the desire for the a community pub?
